Richard attended law school at the Brigham Young University, J. Reuben Clark School of Law. Richard was part of the WAC Chapmionship swimming team at BYU and placed first and second in relays and individual events at Conference Championship swimming meets.

In August of 2005, Richard Barnes became the first person from the state of Utah to successfully swim the English Channel. Known as the Mount Everest of swimming, Richard Barnes entered an elite group of swimmers who have successfully made the 21 mile crossing. Out of thousands of attempts, only approximately 1000 people have completed the swim, less than half of the number of people who have climbed Mt. Everest. Because of the difficulty of the sea and weather conditions on the day he swam, he was awarded the 2005 Greatest Feat of Endurance by the Channel Swimming Association. In 2006 Richard Barnes was inducted in the Utah Summer Games Hall of Honor.

Mr. Barnes also speaks the Micronesian language Palauan, after living on the small Pacific island for two years. Richard was born in Long Beach California and grew up in the Salt Lake area since the age of 9. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, running, reading, and spending time with his wife and seven children.
